Application Performance and How Apdex Makes it Better
Application performance management (APM) links application performance goals to business objectives. APM assures that the user traffic flows operate properly. This session describes APM within the ITIL framework, and in the context of the stages of APM maturity. The Application Performance Index (Apdex) is an open standard methodology that is key to successful APM (see apdex.org). Apdex is a numerical measure of user satisfaction with the performance of enterprise applications. The session provides an overview of Apdex and how it enables better APM results.
Session Chair: Chris Loosley, CTO UpRight Marketing
Speaker: Peter Sevcik, Executive Director, Apdex Alliance
This session describes the process and strategic choices enterprises must make to implement the Apdex methodology. The process leverages existing technologies and instrumentation tools while improving APM best practices. A state-of-the-art snapshot of APM best practices benchmarks for more than 300 companies will be presented. The elements of an Apdex implementation process model will be outlined in addition to strategies for involving the right parts of an organization to ensure a successful Apdex outcome.

Measurement Tools and Reports
Successful APM begins by measuring and baselining performance data. The Apdex Alliance has an ongoing initiative to catalog tools and vendors that can form a foundation for Apdex reporting. Representatives from innovative vendors that support the Apdex methodology will present their current and future product plans. Speakers will describe customer case study results. Note that the session moderator will ensure that speakers focus on technical solutions and not marketing hype.

Setting Performance Objectives Using Apdex
This session describes the two performance objectives that are used in Apdex: the response time target T, and the Apdex score goal. The session will present optional approaches to defining and validating T. The session will then describe how to set the application performance goal as defined by the Apdex score. More mature stages of Apdex implementation including its use in service level agreements (SLAs) will also be discussed. Attendees will learn how to track Apdex over time, make performance improvements, and implement a continuing improvement process.
